FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER INTERVIEW

1. How does this collection speak to you? How did it come about? What did you want this to say to your audience?
Nicholas: The idea behind ‚Mary‘ was to create a flowery spring-editorial on the one hand - with a romantic, nearly mystical look on the other hand. As you can see, every photo has a piece of clothing which is entirely covered in flowers. In contrast to them, my stylist Cesco found some great
stuff with strong, but plain colours to get a harmonic look. "

2. What do you find to be the most difficult when bringing a team of artists together to create a cohesive look? How do you pick the right team?
Nicholas: As often in life you have to listen to what feels right from the inside. Some artists may be way better in their profession, but if you are unable to work with them 12 hours a day, you are going to see that in the photos afterwards. The greatest difficulty I see is to get everyones
imagination of how the editorial will look like right. But then again: In a good team you can discuss everything and find possible solutions for any disagreements that might occur."

3. As an editorial artist, what do you feel is one of the biggest mistakes beginners tend to make?
Nicholas: In my opinion, many young photographers are not curious and brave enough. They tend to shoot the same motives over and over again - are more focused on technical performances of
their equipment than on creating an image that stands out."

4. How would you describe your artistic style?
Nicholas: I am definitely inspired by great photographers like Kristian Schuller, Tim Walker or Gregoire Alexandre, but honestly I am far away from their professionality at the moment. I can say that, because I know how hard I am working on myself and „my style“ - and what might come
within the next few years. So for now I would describe myself as a playful photographer - experimenting with concepts and looks.

5. Do you prefer to be behind the camera or in front of it?
Nicholas: Definitely behind.

6. What is your greatest weakness; your greatest strength?
Nicholas: Ambition - it’s both a weakness and a strengh. It pushes you to the next level, but can also decrease your creativity when you are too focused on work, than to allow yourself some time off."

7. What misconceptions do you think outsiders have about fashion and beauty editorials?
Nicholas: That magazines pay you for publishing your work exclusively. ;-)

8. What is your secret to keeping a happy balanced life while following your passion?
Nicholas: Sometimes - just sometimes - work is not THAT important, even when it seems to be. You have to try this one: Get out of the house without your smartphone or other digital device and
discover your city, or better: the urban hinterland. Can be surprisingly relaxing.

9. Music feeds the soul and often motivates. What music are you playing while you are shooting?
Nicholas: I have a special playlist for photo shootings with artists like Kanye West, Portugal. The Man, Lykke Li, or The Black Keys. We listen to it until someone plugs in his smartphone and wants
to play „Happy“ again, because … yeah. Don’t know why.

10. Words to live by?
Nicholas: Stay hungry, stay foolish, folks!

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER INTERVIEW

1. How does this collection speak to you? How did it come about? What did you want this to say to your audience?
I was very excited to shoot this story. I always wanted to be a painter and admire a lot of surreal dreamy artists, like Mark Ryden. In many ways, this is a tribute to these painters. One of the reasons why I always admired painters is because my mother is a painter. So, I was very excited to get her involved. She recently retired; so, I thought this would be a good time to get her back to her painting roots. Ergo, I commissioned her to paint the beautiful cloud background for this shoot.

2. What do you find to be the most difficult when bringing a team of artists together to create a cohesive look? How do you pick the right team?
I am very selective about my teams. I need strong artists, but also people who think like me. I need to know my team gets it. I also tend to work with the same people consistently, once I know they are trust worthy. I am lucky to have a lot of great talent that likes to work with me often.

3. As an editorial artist, what do you feel is one of the biggest mistakes beginners tend to make?
I think beginners focus too much on the concept and not on the fashion, or too little and don’t have a cohesive concept. I think editorials are more about giving off a mood, rather than drilling home a pointed idea.

4. How would you describe your artistic style?
Cinematic

5. Do you prefer to be behind the camera or in front of it?
I’m a photographer; so, my job is to say behind the camera.   Although, I don’t mind being in front of it from time to time, for the right photographer.

6. What is your greatest weakness; your greatest strength?
Weakness: I’m probably not the fastest shooter out there. I like to make sure I have the shot, 100%.
Strength: I am very detailed oriented. I want to make sure everything fits and looks as good as it can in camera.

7. What misconceptions do you think outsiders have about fashion and beauty editorials?
I think too many people obsess over how the model looks. Is she too skinny? Too retouched? I think fashion is one of the few places that celebrates some things that others would consider flaws. For example, a girl with gap teeth wouldn’t excite most people, but we love it.

8. What is your secret to keeping a happy balanced life while following your passion?
I am a workaholic.. not so sure I am so good at balance, but I am happy.

9. Music feeds the soul and often motivates. What music are you playing while you are shooting?
Honestly, I consider the model the most important person on my set. If she/he isn’t happy we are not getting good images. So, I tend to play what they want to hear. But if I need more energy, Lady Gaga is a safe bet.

10. Words to live by?
Never be bored.

FEATURED MAKEUP ARTIST INTERVIEW

1. What do you hope your contribution to the project says to the viewers?
I hope this beauty editorial shows how I really see the transformation of colors, their evolution in a spring/summer look and, of course, how everyone of us can wear any color and feel splendid.

2.How has working with a team benefited you aside from strengthening your skills?
Working with a team is the best learning technique any artist can have because you share your views and opinions and you acquire new ones, sometimes when you have not even thought about
them at all. I really enjoy putting my ideas in common with the rest of the team.

3.What is some good advice for Makeup Artists striving to work in this industry?
First of all, you have to be very sure that you want to be a make-up artist because it is a very tough world with a lot of good professionals with a vast experience. You have to practice a lot, obviously making a lot of mistakes, but there is no other way of learning and you have to find your style, be
yourself, that is what will make you “You”.

4.What do you find to be the most rewarding and difficult when working with a team of artists to meet a common look?
The most rewarding thing is when you reach this agreement that puts all of you in the same line and the rest just flows, that is amazing! On the other hand, the most difficult time comes when, for some reason, another artist just does not see what you see or when you yourself are not in the
mood this day and everything is black (believe me it happens).

5.How do you plan for the unexpected?
Well, that is a good question because it takes a lot of time for you to be prepared for the unexpected. What I always do is plan 2 or 3 extra make-up changes, in case anything goes wrong
or if you suddenly realize that one exact look could go better with another make-up.

6.What do you feel is a common mistake Makeup Artists make?
A common mistake is not practice enough, if you do something correct once, do it again and make it perfect. This is an advice a make-up artist told me once and I will remember forever

7.What advanced classes have you taken that you feel has helped you the most?
After learning the basic rules at school, what helps you the most is everyday work and practice on yourself because you acquire the ability to correct your mistakes in a way you can never expect.

8.What do you say to those who don’t feel education is important throughout their career?
I can only speak from my own experience, because every make-up artist is unique, but I strongly believe that education can only be acquired in everyday life. What you learn in make-up schools are the techniques and the base for a good make-up but a make-up artist acquires a name for
his/her style and that is something you cannot learn in a school.

9.How do you keep your style fresh?
When I am not working, I am reading and watching lots and lots of fashion editorials. I love rereading magazines from my “fashion shelf” and discovering new ideas.

10.What would you say you have learned of most value through your experiences as a Makeup Artist?
I have learned a lot throughout these years but specially to be curious about this world and being humble about your work, because everyday you learn new things and you are not perfect yet.

11.How would you describe your style?
I would describe myself as a 21st century make-up artist who enjoys colours, I really love using colourful eyeshadows and lipsticks, but what I absolutely love are eyeliners in all shapes, colours and dimensions.

12.How did you get your start in the editorial world? How hard or easy was it for you to build your career?
I do editorials since the very beginning because I think it is really good for a make-up artist to be able to create. In Fashion editorials, you are subjected to the kind of clothes, the season, etc but, in
a way, you are able to contribute something that makes this very editorial different from another one using the same clothes.
In relation with the easiness or hardness of building a career, I can´t tell you because ,as I stated before, I think you build it everyday and work by work. I can only tell you that it is so gratifying when someone tells you `I love your work´...

13.What has been the most amazing opportunity you have had in this industry so far?
I cannot name just one amazing opportunity because for me every beauty shoot, every portrait, is an opportunity to experiment and learn new techniques.

14.What colors are you in love with right now?
Now that we are in the Spring/ Summer mood I am crazy about Yellow and Purple and I am looking forward to doing a beauty shoot just using these colours.

15.What inspires you?
I feel inspiration in the colours and textures of the flowers, specially in Spring.

16.Next BIG goal?
I won´t tell you yet, in case it doesn´t happen, but you will see soon enough.
