BLOOMS OF SUNRISE , a collection by HAIRSTYLIST Nadia Semanic
“Blooms of Sunrise” was originally inspired by the surrealist master- Salvador Dali. Dali’s images capture an almost hallucinogenic and dream like state, which draws the eye in, seamlessly including elements that are disturbed and confronting, yet hauntingly beautiful.
Rather than a slavish attempt to recreate the images of this consummate surrealist, this collection interprets the recurring symbolism of Dali. It evolves the concept of surrealism to encapsulate a real sense of disturbance, with specific reference to the iconic work of Alfred Hitchcock and his dark psychological undertones and portrayal of heroines.
Lighting was integral to capture this, working with a yellow top light and contrasting cooler aqua backdrop to create a dramatically unnerving visual. This sense of disturbance was exaggerated by the delivery of a strong black edge. Styling was inspired by Dali’s collaborator and fellow rule-breaker, Elsa Schiaparelli, and her intricate couture work in the 1940s

FEATURED WARDROBE STYLIST INTERVIEW
1. What does this collection say about your mindset when you were creating it?
I think it shows that we are dreamers; we manifested a place in time, that shows a story about a boy who is yet to experience the world, but wants to do so. In the normality of everyday life it shows that contentment is never attainable, so as humans we dream, we create, and we struggle to build something close to perfect. That satisfaction can sometimes be attained in dreams.
2. Where do you most often find inspiration from? And when you loose it.... what do you do to find it?
We often find inspiration from everyday life, stories from strangers, experiences and choosing to open our eyes to all things that you come across on your daily endeavors, I think you must take nothing to granted cause inspiration can come in many shapes and forms, and at times when we feel like we have lost it, we walk our city, take new adventures, get to know the people in our community, submerge ourselves in things that make us feel good and alive, and before you know it the creative juices starts flowing again.
3. What is your favorite styled photo shoot? Why did it stand out to you?
We remember seeing Anne Hathaway on the cover of W magazine many years ago at the stat of my career, there was something about it the was so inspiring, the styling was lavish, and grand, but yet so minimal, it almost felt like a dream, and we remember telling ourselves if we can create looks that can stand the test of time, trends and all, and remain timeless in its own stand then that is what we want to do with every chance we get.
4.Why editorial, session work? So many say it's a dead road....Why did you continue to pursue this path?
I guess we can be a little rebellious, hearing people say that in the past, yes it was disheartening, but that is the key to our drive, mostly you want to prove people wrong, and on the other hand, can you really give up something you love, I think yes if you go into it calculating dollar signs you will run for the hills to save your wallet, but if you don't run and you face it and you work hard on your craft and get through the hard times, the fruits of your labor and sacrifice begins to bare itself, and ones that flow begins, you take a deep hard breath, and soak in the feeling of beating the odds. Your passion is life so why not fight for it.
5.While on set, how do you stay focused?
Being on set is like a boost of energy, you get to see your imagination come to life, and its like a surge to your creativity, I think we find focus in knowing that you can't be lazy, keep your eyes on the prize and it will show in your work, but find moments for selfies, and twerking.
6. Share with us the most unexpected thing that happened while on set, good or bad?
There are times when Models do not show!!! And that is the most horrible thing ever.
7. Favorite quote or quotes you live by? And how do you apply them to your work? What is your personal mantra?
1. “If you want to be extraordinary- you will not get there by hanging around a bunch of people who tell you you’re not extraordinary. Instead, you will probably become as ordinary as they expect you to be.” - Kelly Cutrone
I think no matter what you always have to believe in your personal talent, take creative criticism lightly if valid apply them and improve on the things that you need improvement in. But at the most part don't ever become what people want you to be, and surround yourself with humans that have great spirits, build your tribe of friends keep them close and inspire each other to achieve greatness.
Our personal mantra is, don't get too caught up in the craziness around you, the mind is delicate, love your family, keep great friendships, feed your dogs, stay humble, work hard then get some rest!!! You would be surprised on how great this works for us.
8. Is there one experience in particular, that has made the biggest impact in your career?
We feel like every experience has an impact and we walk away from it an enlightened individual.
9. What do you think is the common mistakes within the industry? And what can others do to avoid being a cliché?
I think people get to caught up, in fashion, that they suck the life out of it, I think fashion is an individual journey, it is suppose to be a representation of self. So when people get to caught up in trends and all the nonsense, you almost loose your self and become a cookie cutter manifestation of commercialized fashion. I think you have to remember to show forth the fashion you love, believe in it represent it, and you will emerge a style of your own, people have to remember to be different, the greats don't become great by thinking like the person beside them or in back of them, and most and foremost stay kind. At the end of the day we have to remember that the fashion world is a world on its own, life still happens.
10. If you can go back to the beginning of your career? What piece of advice would you give your newbie self?
We would tell ourselves to stay hungry, keep building your craft, and don't rest on great. Create great relationships with people treasure those relationships and stay true to your vision. And just have FUN!!!
11. Who is your biggest role model and why? What collection stands out in your mind?
Our biggest role model would have to be Tom Ford; his vision is timeless, and inspiring. So many collections from past like LANVIN, Anna Sui, Rick Owens, and many more creative minded designers have served as such inspirations to us in the past years that it would be heart breaking to choose one.
12. Favorite Adult beverage? Why.... when did you first have one?
Jameson on the rocks, it’s very straight to the point, cool and smooth. And Tequila Shots just for the obvious fact that great adventures start with tequila. Ever since alcohol have touched these lips that has been the drink of choice.

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER INTERVIEW
1. What does this collection say about your mindset when you were creating it?
That, in another time and another place, I probably would have been a
mathematician or accountant. Something a bit more ordered and organized than a photographer at least.
2. Where do you most often find inspiration from? And when you lose it...what do you do to find it?
Inspiration is hard to pin down… If I were to try to source it, I’d say that it comes from an amalgamation of things I see in day-to-day life, ranging from the obvious (like looking at the work of other photographers) to the less apparent (like the way light falls on a wall or the clothing worn by a random passerby). In the rare times where I do find myself lacking ideas taking a few days off to just relax, read a book, listen to some music and generally wind down tends to allow my mind to begin turning again.
3. What do you look for and look out for... when putting together the perfect set team?
More than anything I want people who are passionate about their areas of
expertise, willing to work hard and who have a genuine desire to be creative and try new things.
4. Why editorial, session work? So many say it’s a dead road... why did you
continue to pursue this path?
Because editorial work, as hard as it is, tends to be both the most creative and allows the most creative freedom. Besides, there’s no rule which says you can’t do both editorials and campaigns. Why restrict yourself?
5. While on set, how do you stay focused?
Abundant amounts of caffeine and a crippling fear of failure.
6. Share with us the most unexpected thing that has happened while on set, good or bad.
I'll go one better and share something that happened on this exact shoot – The female model who was originally cast just didn't show up. Normally this would spell disaster however, in this case, as we were set to shoot both a man and a woman over the course of the day we could begin shooting the man. I had originally intended to swap the models in and out (so the shooting would go male > female > male > female) so we swapped to shooting all of the men’s images first. Having to coordinate shooting an editorial with a full crew whilst also liaising with the model agency to cast a new person and get them on-set in time to have full makeup/hair done, making sure to stick to schedule the entire time… that was an interesting day.
7. Favorite quote or quotes you live by? And how do you apply them to your
work? What is your personal mantra?
No specific quote springs to mind but my personal mantra (or perhaps ideal) is that the best shoot or work that I've done is now the low bar – that everything that comes after has to be either equally as good or better.
8. Is there anyone experience(s) in particular that you feel has made the biggest impact on your career?
Assisting alongside some of the top photographers in the country is something that I've done and recommend to anyone who wants to become a photographer – being able to watch people who have spent their lives mastering their craft is both inspiring and enables you to learn a huge amount in a short span of time. I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am now had I not assisted.
9. What do you believe is a common mistake within the industry? And what can others do to avoid being a cliché?
In my opinion: Not taking enough risks. Too many young creatives say they like to think “outside the box” and yet are afraid to fail. If you embrace failure and understand that not everything you try will turn out roses-and-gold then you’ll both avoid cliché entirely and produce some wonderful work during the times that your risks pay off.
10. Favorite adult beverage? Why...and when did you first have one?
Whiskey neat – I like the taste of it and it’s a great drink to have for being able to recline back at the end of a hard day and contemplate life. First had one back when I was studying though I only started liking them several years later.

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER INTERVIEW
1. What does this collection say about your mindset when you were creating it?
We worked with ICOSAE (french brand created by young guys talented) for their last collection talks about bad students at school. The idea of this editorial was to build an after school world about those students. I've never been a brilliant student, so I tried to include this into my latest session. Guillaume and Paul were very important for this editorial. They both fit in so well with the story we were trying to tell.
2. Where do you most often find inspiration from? And when you lose it…what do u do to find it?
Most of my inspiration is from Tumblr, or from music, friends, even my cats inspire me. I am very picky about the models I shoot, It helps me to have interesting people with whom I can work. Talking with models before a photoshoot is very important to understand who they are and how they live may help you in so many ways. If you lose your inspiration while shooting them or something is off it help to be able to relate to them so the team can get back on track.
3. What do you look for and lookout for… when putting together the perfect set team?
You know you have a perfect set team, when you don't realise you are working, and you are totally enjoying what you're doing. This kind of team makes you forget all the restrictions you may have on a photoshoot. Working with young talented, creative and open minded people is the most important point for me. Above all, for a perfect set team, each members should left all their home baggage at...home..
4. Why editorial, session work? So many say it’s a dead road… why did you continue to pursue this path?
We all know that editorials don't pay the bills, or make you famous but it is very important for me to create stories. Having something in mind, that obsesses you, that make it real, that's the goal of an editorial. I see editorials as an open road. From the editorial you just created to the one you'll make, each are connected. Each story you shoot, is a prelude to a better one. I hope to be around for a long while to keep telling wonderful stories through the lens.
5. While on set, how do you stay focused?
I'm focused only while pushing the button of my camera the rest of the time, I'm enjoying working with the team. My goal is to never get bored with what I am shooting. I try to prep well while working on a "project", I talk with my team, trying to find new spot for shoots. On set, I try to free my mind to stay focused on the task at hand.
6. Share with us the most unexpected thing that has happened while on set, good or bad.
I broke a camera lens last week during a photoshoot. One of the lens fell off and I was like "Oh well this kind of things happen", I was the only one laughing, still don't know why! A fun fact is when a bird pooped on a model's face, but that time everybody was laughing!
7. Favorite quote or quotes you live by? And how do u apply them to your work? What is your personal mantra?
"If you wasn't here when I was down, then you won't be here when I'm up". I know, this isn't a very philosophical quote, I just heard it from an Iggy Azalea song a few days ago. I think it perfectly represents my mood at the moment. Helping people who gave you a hand and be there when it is necessary for those who need it. I believe in a kind of karma. You can't preach bad deeds, and wait for good to come.
8. Is there anyone experience(s) in particular that you feel has made the biggest impact on your career?
Firstly Paul and Pauline, my both BFF, who have always been there, even before I started doing photography. I almost killed Paul once while shooting him on a train rail! We didn't see the train was coming and we just had time to jump off the rail and we fell on a bush. All the people we met during the beginning of our career are important. Some count more than the others, but they all affect us.
9. What do you believe is a common mistake within the industry? And what can others do to avoid being a cliché?
Well here in France, you're not recognized for your talent but your contacts. There are only a few people who really started from the bottom. The reason why we see so many shit in art galleries is because today it's more important to know who did what than being talented. After a time in Paris, you know who you can sleep if you want something. I don't know who is to blame, those who make you understand that you have to sleep with them, or those who accept. So if you don't want to become a cliché, keep your honor.
10. Favorite adult beverage? Why…and when did u first have one?
Red wine, for my taste, I love it fruity, strong but light. Maybe I drank to much the first time because I can't remember when it was!

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER INTERVIEW
1. What does this collection say about your mindset when you were creating it?
When creating this collection, I started with feelings that I wanted to evoke out of my subject and the setting or location that would compliment that. I wanted to capture the natural beauty of my subject in a calm, refreshing, summer atmosphere.
2. Where do you most often find inspiration from? And when you lose it…what do you do to find it?
I seek inspiration from different sources such as, Fine art photography, documentary photography and fashion photographers. I also get inspired by traveling, the many faces I encounter daily and landscape scenery. When I feel I am loosing inspiration, I would revisit inspiration clippings and boards that collect constantly.
3. What do you look for and lookout for… when putting together the perfect set team?
When putting together my perfect team, I look for individuals who are passionate and as motivated as I am. Without a balanced team, my vision will not come through.
4. Why editorial, session work? So many say it’s a dead road… why did you continue to pursue this path?
Editorial projects are fun to create and I enjoy the whole process from working with my team to bringing my idea to life.
5. While on set, how do you stay focused?
While on set, I play music that helps evoke the emotional feelings I want to capture from my subjects, while at the same time keeping me focused and distraction free.
6. Share with us the most unexpected thing that has happened while on set, good or bad.
On one of my earlier photo shoots when I first started photography, my whole team got paid after the shoot that I was doing for free. It was a beautiful surprise because I was not expecting that, I was doing the shoot for fun to begin with.
7. Favorite quote or quotes you live by? And how do you apply them to your work? What is your personal mantra?
“Travel as much as you can, as far as you can, as long as you can. Life is not meant to be lived in one place” by Unknown. This quote inspires me to see more of the world with camera in hand seeking continued adventures. My personal mantra is good things don’t come easy. Which is a continuous reminder to work hard in everything I do.
8. Is there anyone experience(s) in particular that you feel has made the biggest impact on your career?
In high school I won four awards for some photos I submitted to an All City Arts competition. The attention I received motivated and inspired me to keep going. It was the first time I saw the significance of photography.
9. What do you believe is a common mistake within the industry? And what can others do to avoid being a cliché?
A common misconception in the industry is aspiring artists expect immediate success, when in reality it takes hard work and patience. I truly believe that you should stay true to your heart and vision. That will surely show in your work.
10. Favorite adult beverage? Why… and when did u first have one?
Although I am a avid water drinker, I do time to time prefer Pina Coladas.

FEATURED MAKEUP ARTIST QUESTIONS
1. What does this collection say about your mindset when you were creating it?
Haha, I think I was in a state of panic while creating the looks. So that possibly comes across. The model had a reaction to something and was tearing up pretty badly so we had to improvise and I couldn't use liner or shadow in places that I would have liked to.
2. Where do you most often find inspiration from? And when you lose it…what do u do to find it?
Inspiration can be found anywhere if you look long enough but I would say I'm truly inspired by motion. I love watching things move, animals, plants, an artists hands waves in the water. When I lose my inspiration I usually go on a lot of walks, listen to music or I love sketching out face charts. Getting my hands moving usually does the trick.
3. What's your favorite technique or trick? And who taught it to you?
My favorite trick is to layer a white pencil under a bright color to get it to pop even more. I have no idea where I learned it from, probably instagram or something haha!
4. Why editorial, session work? So many say it’s a dead road… why did you continue to pursue this path?
Editorials are so necessary in the world of fashion and beauty. You have to continue to grow and be challenged as an artist and editorials allow you to do that. Testing allows you to try things you've never tried before and that's always good for the soul.
5. While on set, how do you stay focused?
LOT'S OF COFFEE!!! Partly true, but I generally don't have a problem staying focused. If need be I take a 10 to be by myself and sit in silence. Some would call it meditation I think I call it a time out.
6. Share with us the most unexpected thing that has happened while on set, good or bad.
I was doing a video shoot for a clothing store and in one of the scenes the models were completely submerged in a water tank which was made by amateurs. Well one of the seems bursted on the tank and filled the entire studio floor with gallons of water. You can imagine how scary that is with a ton of electrical equipment around.
7. Favorite quote or quotes you live by? And how do u apply them to your work? What is your personal
mantra?
"Such as we are made of, such we be." This quote is taken from Shakespeare's 12th Night. Basically Viola blames Olivia's desire for "Cesario" on women's "frailty." The idea is that women are emotionally and morally "frail" because their soft bodies (what they "are made of") are also "frail." But to me it means so much more because only you can determine what you are made of and what you can endure and make of situations. It's a strong quote for me because it emotes so much of what I think women are, not frail but so much stronger than we let on. I have this quote tattooed on my arm. :)
8. Is there anyone experience(s) in particular that you feel has made the biggest impact on your career?
Hands down it was my time at MAC. It was my start in the makeup world and I never looked back. MAC taught me so much about artistry, technique and confidence. It was a great place for me to thrive.
9. What do you believe is a common mistake within the industry? And what can others do to avoid being a
cliché?
The common mistake is that crazy creative makeup will get you far. The reality is that the people that ultimately pay you will be hiring you for things where you barely feel like an artist. Natural pretty makeup is what you will do the most. I made that mistake early in my career and I feel it definitely put me a little behind.
10. If you could go back to the beginning of your career, what piece of advice would you give your newbie
self ?
See above, haha.
11. Who is your biggest role model and why? What collection stands out in your mind?
My husband is my biggest role model. He is the most selfless, humble person I know. He encourages and pushes me and believes in me and he also happens to be extremely talented, he just doesn't know it. Which is a good thing. Ego can kill a career.
12. What colors are you in love with right now?
I don't discriminate, I love all color but I have to say that I had a healthy obsession with white and gold over the summer.
13.. Favorite adult beverage? Why…and when did u first have one?
I'm simple, I like a great tequila on the rocks with fresh lime juice. I've had too many to remember where I first had one!

FEATURED MAKEUP ARTISTS INTERVIEW
1. What does this collection say about your mindset when you were creating it?
This creation was really a free for all. I knew we had accessories we wanted to highlight, so it became a team effort. Once the inspiration was shown to me, I decided to go along with the theme for each accessory.
2. Where do you most often find inspiration from? And when you lose it...what do u do to find it?
Most induration comes from other art mediums. I never look at makeup for inspiration, as it doesn't seem like a genuine way to come up with your own ideas. I love paintings, especially watercolors, when I'm searching for ideas. When I lose inspiration, I usually put on some John Coltrane and it somehow comes back to me.
3. What's your favorite technique or trick? And who taught it to you?
I don't have a favorite technique, but my favorite, most important rule of executing great makeup is starting with a good skincare base. If the skin looks good, you're already one step ahead!
4. Why editorial, session work? So many say it’s a dead road... why did you continue to pursue this path?
I believe in moving forward with the times, but I'm a strong believer that in order to love forward, you must first know your history. Editorial work is the base of every successful makeup artist. The greats are still behind every major magazine cover to this day.
5. While on set, how do you stay focused?
Coffee! I'm only half joking. I always have coffee, and I always believe in standing behind the photographer at all times. It keeps you on your feet!
6. Share with us the most unexpected thing that has happened while on set, good or bad.
Once while shooting, we decided to paint a models hair, thinking it would wash out immediately. We were completely wrong, and had to deal with the peeling paint on her head. The photos came out stunning. It was a serendipitous moment.
7. Favorite quote or quotes you live by? And how do u apply them to your work? What is your personal mantra?
I don't have a personal mantra, but I always read the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. There's a line in the poem that says, "I took the one less traveled, and that has made all the difference". I've followed
this since the 7th grade, and it really has made all the difference!
8. Is there anyone experience(s) in particular that you feel has made the biggest impact on your career?
I think winning NAHA (NORTH AMERICAN HAIRSTYLING AWARDS) Makeup Artist of the Year in 2011 made me feel like I had much more to accomplish. Although it was an honor to win, as soon as I accepted the award, I thought, "Now what?" I think like this every day after I finish a job. It's taught me to never settle. I plan to keep not settling. :)
9. What do you believe is a common mistake within the industry? And what can others do to avoid being a cliché?
They say imitation is the biggest form of flattery, but think it becomes the death of a career. I think as long as you stay genuine and unique to your art, you will stay attain and maintain success. Success will never ever become cliché.
10. If you could go back to the beginning of your career, what piece of advice would you give your newbie self ?
Quit rushing! I think when we begin, we think we have to have a photo shoot booked every day, and do every kind of makeup. As I look back, I realize I shot so many unimportant things. You couldn't bribe me not to shoot even the most ridiculous of ideas, back in the day.
11. Who is your biggest role model and why? What collection stands out in your mind?
I don't really have a role model, but I do admire women who have broken down doors for our advancement. I worked with Gina Gershon once, and she gave me the best advice. "Don't take shit from anyone. If someone
says you can't, you prove them wrong. Period." That's the best advice I've ever received.
12. What colors are you in love with right now?
Teals! I can't get enough. Bright magenta is a close second.
13.. Favorite adult beverage? Why...and when did u first have one?
I love a good glass of Merlot. It hits all five senses. I first had it in college. Where I once thought it was a drink for "old people", I soon realized it what the hype was all about. A drink that demands you to slow down, is a drink that has to be respected!

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER INTERVIEW
1. What does this collection say about your mindset when you were creating it?
I love to capture strength in women. It’s the cornerstone of my style. Juliana is a very strong and empowered NY woman, she was perfect to shoot!
2. Where do you most often find inspiration from? And when you lose it...what do u do to find it?
I am mostly inspired by the models I select. I am a casting nazi!! I run on instinct and I know when I see a model who will inspire me and then on set the inspiration flows. When I run dry on inspiration I stop shooting, I go to Byron Bay and just walk on the beach with my dog Muppet the Wonder Dog. Inspiration is everywhere in Byron.
3. What do you look for and lookout for... when putting together the perfect set
team?
I was really lucky to be selected by international make up artists from the very beginning of my career. So these days I look for creatives with high standards. That said, I gravitate towards incredibly humble, secure and kind people so I have ended up working with the same creatives for most of my career. I become very attached to my team members!! They are my closest friends.
4. Why editorial, session work? So many say it’s a dead road... why did you
continue to pursue this path?
I love shooting editorial, its artistic and creative. I never listen to people's negative opinions. There will always be a place for editorial work.
5. While on set, how do you stay focused?
I am a very focused person so I actually switch off everything else when I shoot. I solely focus on the model and we get into this space where its just us. I literally can’t even hear my phone. It is like being in a casino, time just slips past and all of a sudden the shoot is over. I am never so happy as when I am shooting!!!! Total euphoria .. who wouldn’t block out the world for that!
6. Share with us the most unexpected thing that has happened while on set, good or bad.
OHHHH this is a good question!!! So many things happen. I never gossip about the hiccups …but…On one shoot the model turned up so high on drugs they could not stand or speak. They just giggled. Oddly enough she still looked really good!!! Imagine how good she could look if she turned up like
a professional and worked. The client was a powerful client and was very very unhappy. It was a tense hectic shoot.
7. Favorite quote or quotes you live by? And how do u apply them to your work? What is your personal mantra?
I am very philosophical and all about meaning and depth in my life. My quote is the following. “It's not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.” I believe life is short so find out who you are and honour it. Make a positive impact!!!!!!!
8. Is there anyone experience(s) in particular that you feel has made the biggest impact on your career?
They say life comes down to 5 pinnacle moments. I can identify mine so far. Through very odd once in a life time circumstances I was given a brand new SLR and lens. From my first reel of film I shot I had one thing happen after the other that pushed me on my current career path and I am grateful for each and every one of them!
9. What do you believe is a common mistake within the industry? And what can others do to avoid being a cliché?
Be a person first, your career is only one aspect of your life. Be an individual and remember to live your life being true to who you are. Regardless of how successful you are always remember you are just a person, so try to always deal with other people with respect and consideration.
10. Favorite adult beverage? Why...and when did u first have one?
Champagne, I am only first gen Australian from a European Mother so we were allow to have a small glass of champagne from young at family events.
